Dr Paul Barach

Dr Paul Barach is senior research fellow at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, associate professor at the University of South Florida and chair of research at the Center for Health Design.

Dr Barach has over 15 years experience in researching, teaching and applying human factors and quality improvement methods to healthcare and has been integrally involved as a clinician, educator, researcher and policy maker in enhancing healthcare improvement and patient safety policy in the United States, Europe and, more recently, Australia. Dr Barach is a board certified, practicing anesthesiologist with fellowship training in critical care medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He founded the Center for Patient Safety and Simulation at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital.

He has authored over 150 scientific papers. He has been actively involved in exploring the design and impact of healthcare facilities on patient outcomes and has been involved in the design of several hospitals in the US and Europe. His major research focus is on developing and extending theoretical work in the areas of injury prevention, patient safety and quality improvement.

He co-chairs the Center for Health Design Research Coalition, and is a member of the US Federal Guidelines Institute. He is the recipient of over $10 million in research funding.
