Geoff Abbott

Geoff Abbott is an architect from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa specialising in Health Facility Architecture and Immovable Asset Management. He holds a B degree in Architecture from the University of Pretoria and an M.Arch degree from the University of Natal.

Geoff is a past National President of the South African Federation of Hospital Engineering (SAFHE) and was recently awarded honorary life membership by the organisation. He also represents South Africa on the Public Health Group of the International Union of Architects (PHG-UIA) and an Executive Member for Africa.

His current focus is in the areas of strategic planning, design and management of immovable assets with a special focus on health buildings. He is involved in the development of tools for health facilities performance assessment and strategic planning and the development of design guidelines and the roll-out of a Global Fund programme in South Africa for long term accommodation for patients with drug-resistant TB.

Geoff is the author and co-author of many publications, conference papers and posters of which the latest were papers at the 36th World Hospital Congress of the International Hospital Federation, Rio de Janeiro and the 29th Seminar of the PHG-UIA in Buenos Aires both in November 2009. He currently lectures in health facility planning and design at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town and in property management at the University of the Free State.
