Singapore and Australia raise design bar at 2011 awards

Singapore and Australia show strength at 2011 Academy Awards

In a challenge to Europe and North America's pre-eminence in healthcare design, health facility projects from Singapore and Australia have proved that they can be the new standard bearers for health facility design.

Whilst the new Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Singapore were awarded a double prize, winning the Health Project (over 40,000 sqm) and the Sustainable Design Award, with the Ballarat Acute Mental Health Facility in Australia winning the Mental Health Design Award, high commendations were also awarded to the National Heart Centre in Singapore and the Brain and Mind Research Institute - Youth Mental Health Building in Sydney.

Announced at the prestigious Design & Health International Academy Awards in Boston on 9 July, the awards were presented by Dr Ray Pentecost (pictured), the newly appointed President of the International Academy for Design & Health on the final evening of the Design & Health World Congress in Boston. AIA launches new initiative

Architects in the US are being asked to consider their role in addressing public health challenges across north America.

Launched by the American Institute of Architects, America’s Design and Health Initiative (ADHI) aims to articulate specific recommendations for public policy, research priorities, guidelines, and frameworks for lasting collaboration across disciplinary boundaries.

Markku Allison, AIA, Resource Architect at the AIA Center for Value of Design, commented: “Over a decade of research clearly links obesity, physical activity and the built environment. But how, specifically, do we design communities and buildings to positively and measurably influence physical well-being, health and productivity?”

He added: “In coming months, ADHI will progress in three steps, yielding three key deliverables--a body of evidence, a research agenda and policy recommendations--for architects, public health officials and policymakers.

“This information will be used to build a foundation for influential, ongoing dialog on the connections between physical activity, obesity, design and health. By clearly demonstrating connections between design and beneficial health outcomes, ADHI will give architects an important new value proposition for the society we serve."

Founder and director-general of the International Academy for Design & Health (IADH) has been awarded a Presidential Citation by the American Institute of Architects, Academy of Architecture for Health (AIA AAH).

Awarded in celebration of the partnership between the IADH and the AIA AAH in the lead up to the 7th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition in Boston, from 6-10 July, 2011, the citation was presented at the AIA AAH update meeting during the Healthcare Design 2010 conference in Las Vegas this month.

The citation by 2010 AIAAAH president, Dr A Ray Pentecost III, DrPH, FAIA, FACHA and signed by all members of the 2010 AIA AAH board of directors, read: “Alan’s heart-felt passion for the development of an international health design community, his unwavering commitment to excellence in design, his fierce dedication to the promotion of high quality research have done more than stimulate an international dialogue on design research; his achievements demonstrate that championing intellectual honesty in research on the built environment and pursuing uncompromising professionalism in the planning of international gatherings for design researchers and practitioners foster better design, enrich communication and promote better health."

On the receipt of the award, Prof Dilani commented: “The citation is recognition of the strong commitment and support of the AIA AAH AIA and our common global effort to develop research, knowledge of the impact of architecture and design on human health, wellbeing and quality of life. I am extremely grateful for this recognition and the ongoing support of the AIA-AAH in reaching our shared goal in 2010 and into 2011 as we build towards the 7th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition in Boston.”

Following the announcement, the Award was presented privately by Dr Ray Pentecost to Prof Dilani in Boston where he had been lecturing as a visiting Professor to the Harvard School of Public Health, the Harvard School of Design and the Harvard School of Business.

All three schools have now committed their support and faculty to the 7th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition in Boston next July and will be represented by Dr Julio Frenk, dean of the School of Public Health, Mohsen Mostafavi, dean of the School of Design, and Prof Clayton M Christensen from the School of Business.

Pentecost appointed President

Dr Ray Pentecost FAIA, FACHA, LEED AP has been appointed the new President of the International Academy for Design & Health (IADH).

Announced during the Gala Awards Dinner evening at the 7th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition in Boston in July, Pentecost takes on the role following a successful term as president of the American Institute of Architects Academy of Architecture for Health.

Appointed by Dr Alan Dilani, founder and director-general of the IADH, Pentecost’s role will be to work closely with the IADH leadership to establish a platform for international growth in areas where the IADH is uniquely well-suited to have an impact.

The appointment of President is for a two year term with an option to extend by a further two years, with the agreement of the board.

Pentecost, who is a director of healthcare architecture for Clark Nexsen, will take on the role in a voluntary capacity .

Academy recognizes Parker’s lifetime of leadership

The revered architect and industry leader Derek Parker has been awarded the Lifetime Leadership Award by the International Academy for Design & Health.

The award, which recognizes Derek Parker’s visionary career and an ongoing, lifelong commitment to enhancing the health, wellbeing and quality of people’s lives through his dedication to healthcare design, was presented at a prestigious ceremony during the 7^th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition (WCDH2011) at the Marriott Copley Place Hotel in Boston, USA on 9^th July.

On a very special evening, last year’s inaugural winner of the Lifetime Leadership Award, Eb Zeidler travelled from Toronto with his wife to present the award together with the IADH’s newly appointed president, Dr Ray Pentecost, bringing to a finale the celebrations at the WCDH2011 and the Design & Health International Academy Awards 2011.

Health providers, clinicians, architects, designers and contractors were joined by Ministry of Health representatives from across the globe to recognize a lifetime of achievement that saw Derek Parker lead Anshen + Allen to become one of the leading international architects with specialisms in healthcare and education design.

As a co-founder of the US-based, Center for Healthcare Design, which has led the movement to improve healthcare practices through evidence-based design research, and a co-creator of the ‘Fable Hospital’, developed as a model for estimating the value of design impacts on healthcare operations and outcomes, Parker’s list of career highlights and achievements has few peers.

Felicia Cleper-Borkovi, who worked with Derek Parker at Anshen + Allen, and was the creative force behind a video presentation of his achievements during the Gala Awards evening, commented: "Having worked with Derek for 29 out of his 50 years dedicated to Anshen+Allen, I know I represent only one of the many generations of architects, engineers, clients, design consultants, along with doctors, nurses, technicians, patients and families around the world touched by Derek’s “magic”, who are in awe with his aspirations and achievements, entrepreneurship and unequalled gravitas.”

Prof Alan Dilani, director of the International Academy for Design & Health, commented: “To have the opportunity of being able to recognize Derek Parker with the International Academy for Design & Health’s Lifetime Leadership Award is a great honour and privilege. Since I first met Derek, he has inspired me and has always been there for the Academy, never failing to offer his support, advice and guidance.”
