With the rapid increase in population, Singapore is undergoing major development of healthcare projects for the next decade. To boost the economy, the government is also promoting health tourism, which imposes additional requirements.

The new projects will have different emphasis from the hospitals constructed in the previous decade. Great focus would be placed on ensuring the hospitals are patient centric – friendly and welcoming, emphasising on convenience for the patients and visitors. The hospitals will also be designed with flexibility in mind to cater for the rapid changes in medical treatment. Greater emphasis will also be placed on sustainability, focusing on thermal comfort, energy efficiency and conservation of resources. With the latest focus on research in the life sciences, the new projects will have facilities which will help to enhance collaboration between the scientists and clinicians, encouraging bench to bedside trials. The experience from the SARS outbreak has also impacted on the design of new hospitals.

The new Khoo Teck Puat Hospital will be the first of a new generation of hospitals, and will showcase these new trends. CPG Consultants is the consultant for the new hospital. Ruby Lai from CPG will present a paper on the new trends in healthcare design in Singapore, while Mr Liak Teng Lit, CEO designate of the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, will present the new facility.
